mail list: MPISG-Media by Gita Dewan Verma — last modified 2005-11-27 12:56
Master-Planning Issues in Media: A city master plan is public document. As document it can be purchased. As plan it is best owned by use. One way of using the plan is to view ongoing city developments in its framework. This list is for news about city development and comments on it from the perspective of the master plan, especially Delhi Master Plan.
mail list: Eebill: Common school system by Gita Dewan Verma — last modified 2005-11-27 12:56
The Constitution of India, committed to universalisation of education through a directive principle, was amended to make free and compulsory school education a right. The amendment requires a law to be enacted, draft Bill for which was prepared and twice modified in 2003. In the discourse about the draft bill as well as in recent PIL on free seats for the poor concern for a common school system has been amply reiterated. But holistic solutions suggested in existing law, such as in the equal access neighbourhood school provisions of Delhi Master Plan, although being sought by communities, continue to be disregarded in the discourse. This list is for discussion premised on already existing law, so that the proposed education law improves upon them.
mail list: Redevelopment: as alternative to development by Gita Dewan Verma — last modified 2005-11-27 12:56
Art of development in conventional planning theory and practice, redevelopment, renewal and other 're' terms are gaining currency as alternatives in contemporary discourse and the consequent fuzziness calls for discussion.

mail list: MPISG-Planner: Master plan processes by Gita Dewan Verma — last modified 2005-12-22 05:09
The considerable criticism of master plan based city development is based on certain inadequacies of long-term planning and the fact of reality overtaking plans. What this does not capture is the significance of master plan processes as an instrument for conflict resolution and distributive justice in space and time. While efficiency arguments against the master plan, especially when they do not obfuscate planning and implementation failures, can be persuasive, equity arguments in its favour are compelling. This is a private list for discussion from a pro-Plan perspective. (subscribers only)
